Ocean surcharge glossary

Soft index prints are not the same as a cheaper invoice. Use this list to separate base ocean from the stack that actually hits the bill of lading.

FAK · Freight All Kinds

FAK

A rate bucket that applies the same ocean price to a broad mix of commodities instead of commodity-specific tariffs. Useful for mixed retail loads; still does not include bunker, local charges, or emergency fuel unless the quote says so.

GRI · General Rate Increase

GRI

A carrier-announced across-the-board increase, usually effective on a stated date for a trade. Announced GRIs often soften on the spot market — ask what held on your booking date, not what was advertised.

PSS · Peak Season Surcharge

PSS

A temporary surcharge during high-demand windows. Trigger dates and exempt contracts vary by carrier. Treat it as part of all-in, not an optional footnote.

BAF · Bunker Adjustment Factor

BAF

The ordinary fuel adjustment tied to bunker indices. Separate from one-off emergency fuel language. When oil jumps, BAF and EFS can both move.

EFS · Emergency Fuel Surcharge

EFS

An extraordinary fuel surcharge (names vary: EFS, contingency bunker, war-risk fuel). Often dated by gate-in, bill of lading, or loading — confirm the trigger on the booking confirmation. Soft Drewry prints do not cancel hard EFS.

THC · Terminal Handling Charge

THC

Port/terminal handling at origin and/or destination. Usually quoted per container and often excluded from “ocean only” spot screenshots.

Demurrage & detention

Demurrage and detention

Demurrage: container stays at the terminal past free time. Detention: container stays out past free time. Not a freight rate — still part of landed cost when dwell stretches.

All-in quote

All-in

Base ocean + bunker/EFS + peak/PSS + locals + other accessorials you care about for that sailing. Always ask which lines are included before comparing two offers.
