With El Niño strengthening and Gatun Lake already sliding from its February peak, the ACP has published a stair-step draft schedule that starts biting July 24 — the same week Section 122 tariffs expire and Hormuz keeps choking Gulf traffic.
For shippers routing Asia → US East Coast via Panama, this is a weight-and-stowage problem disguised as a hydrology headline.
What the ACP Announced
In its July 1 advisory, the Panama Canal Authority set progressive Neopanamax draft limits:

Gatun Lake stood at 84.8 ft in the ACP's July 11 official reading — still comfortable versus the sub-80 ft crisis levels of 2023, but falling from the 88.9 ft peak that let the canal promise unrestricted transits earlier this year.
Daily transits remain near ~38/day — high utilization — while the canal simultaneously tightens how much displacement each crossing can carry.
Why Draft Limits Are a Loading Problem
Draft is not abstract naval architecture. It is the difference between sailing as booked and lightening cargo — offloading containers, shifting weight, or missing the transit window.

July 24 is three days after this post publishes. August 15 cuts another six inches of draft. If your peak-season program runs through August, model 48.5 ft today — not as a footnote for later.

The WMO expects El Niño to strengthen rapidly July–September 2026, peaking into Northern Hemisphere autumn.
