40HC vs 40GP for Light Bulky Freight: A Decision Tree

Light, bulky freight — furniture kits, foam, empty packaging, seasonal décor, oversized retail displays — usually hits cube before payload. The booking question becomes: 40GP or 40HC? The high cube adds roughly a foot of internal height and about 9–10 m³ of theoretical volume versus a standard forty. That is not free. HC equipment can cost more, be scarcer on some strings, and still fail if your SKU does not clear the door aperture or stack rules.

As of August 28, 2026, use this decision tree for planning — then verify against the actual equipment profile on your sailing. Specs below are typical ISO family ranges, not a micrometer guarantee.

1. Is the cargo cube-bound (fills volume before weight)?

2. Do cartons / pallets need the extra ~30 cm of height?

3. Does the door opening clear the tallest piece?

Door height is often tighter than internal height. Measure the unit (on pallet, with packaging) against the door aperture, not the ceiling.

4. Will HC availability / rate erase the cube gain?

5. Do port / inland limits care about HC?

Some rail / warehouse doors, warehouse racking, or local chassis pools treat HC differently. Confirm delivery equipment matches the ocean booking.

For light bulky freight, start with cube and door, not the HC label. If an extra tier (or fewer boxes) is real and the door clears, 40HC is usually the right tree branch. If not, a cheaper 40GP with a clean plan beats shipping empty high-cube air.
